The artwork you see on Sarah Smiles combines all the things I love -> fabric, paper, collage, embroidery, old things, imperfect stitching to name a few. Living in Asia has inspired me to create pieces using mainly traditional Korean fabrics and paper. I am always on the hunt for the forgotten fabric scraps in any shop.
I incorporate materials from my travels in Asia such as rare Chinese stamps from amazing flea markets in Beijing, scraps of Thai embroidery from a neighborhood shop in Busan, antique paper from Chinese, Korean and Japanese texts as well as modern Japanese and Scandinavia fabric.
Embroidery is becoming more and more a part of my work, much is inspired from modern Japanese crafts which I cannot get enough of!
